World Costumes

These pages are from the book "World costumes" by Angela Bradshaw published in 1953 by The MacMillian Company, made in Great Britain and printed by Morrison and Gibbs LTD.  This is a library copy but it was in great shape for the age. The book features 142 drawings and 16 colour (as spelled on cover) plates.  It features a wide range of traditional garb from various countries and includes short descriptions of each drawing, with the exception of the plates, which only stat the country. This book was reprinted in 1961 and 1963.  This book is now out of print but may be available at the library.

Little MaryJane

Here is a paper doll from Good Housekeeping magazine 1923, October I think.  She has two hats, one extra dress, some accessories.  Unfortunately, I do not have instructions from page 207, but I believe the child is to use the shoes on their fingers and use the bows (a and b) with some string to tie the doll to their hand.  I tried it myself (with a copy of course) and it seems to work pretty well (perhaps I will take some pictures).  I have a few more of these girls to post later.  This doll was purchased for $2.00 at an antique store.

Jane Arden's Wardobe

Here is a Jane Arden Wardrobe from 2-1-1942.  This doll has four outfits and one hat.  Each of the outfits was designed by a different person, as indicated by the names.  I think it would be neat if a newspaper started doing a paper doll series again, where the readers send in outfit designs.  This is a full comic page but only the paper doll part has been scanned. The page is yellowed and fragile due to age.

RIP Tom Tierney

Sad news for the paper doll world.  Beloved artist Tom Tierney passed away on Saturday, July 12th.  Jenny has a lovely article posted on her blog, and I don't think I could word it any better. http://paperdollreview.blogspot.com/2014/07/normal.html

I have a few books from Tom Tierney, all which are lovely, detailed, and well researched.  His paper doll artwork has inspired many, including myself.

Classic French Fashions

Here are a few fashion plates from the book "Classic French Fashions of the Twenties" which was published by Dover in 2012.  The book features reproduction 1920s catalog pages from the artist Atelier Bachwitz.  There are over 50 pages in the book but only a few are shown here since the book was recently published.  I love that the drawings feature the front and back of each outfit, along with some very fabulous hats.  I would recommend this book for those interested in 1920s fashions, the pages are nice a large (these pictures have been cropped) and the colors and patterns look great.  book for sale  in many places for around $20.00.
